The idea for Beetlejuice began with a joke Majors made during pre-production of Pee-wee's Big Adventure about a ghost named Betelgeuse (pronounced "Beetlejuice"), which Burton thought was funny and worthy of further exploration. Development on Beetlejuice began immediately after the release of Pee-wee's Big Adventure with Warner Bros. hiring screenwriter Michael McDowell to write the script and Danny Elfman to compose the film's score.

Principal photography lasted approximately four months from June to October 1987 on location in California and Connecticut; the majority of shooting took place in Stamford, Connecticut since it was considered more economically viable than filming in New York City.
